ASVAD VALVE IS AWARDED WITH A NEW PRIZE
EURATOM funded research in nuclear energy safety benefits from consistent success in pursuing excellence across a broad range of nuclear science and technologies. Together with EU countries, the programme has continuously helped maintain a high‑level of competences, underpinned by sound and advanced research. Nuclear researchers and engineers are constantly challenging state-of-the-art in the field and improving evolving technologies thereby creating conditions for innovations beyond technologies and scientific breakthroughs, towards a more dynamic and competitive European industry for the benefit of every citizen and the whole of society.
In this background, the EUROPEAN COMMISSION in the Euratom Research and Training Programme, summoned the Nuclear Innovation Prize.
The contest aims to identify potential disruptive innovations across product developments and their supply chain, from research to market where researchers and engineers play a critical role. The prize also highlights and rewards the excellence in nuclear innovation that can be found in this field of research as well as the quality of the talented researchers and industries involved.
Past year, we applied the ASVAD valve project to this 2024 Nuclear Innovation Prize.
Today, we’re proud to inform that the jury, after having completed the evaluation of all the contestants, has been awarded this prize to the ASVAD project in the category of safety of reactor systems. This price comes with a substantial economic reward (30.000€). The Nuclear Innovation Prize will be awarded at the next Euratom Conference (FISA 2025 & EURADWASTE’25) in Warsaw (Poland)
This award, means to us, not only an economical push forward, but also an international recognition to the ASVAD solution. This award is not our first international prize. In the WNE Innovation Awards 2021, the jury already identified the ASVAD potential, and makes us one of 3 finalists in a worldwide contest. Unfortunately this year the prize only was this mention as finalist. Now, a different jury has reached the same conclusion.
The ASVAD Valve deserves its own place among the new safety elements to make safer our PWR nuclear reactors.
Are you going to do something about it? We’re waiting for your contact.

ASVAD RECEIVE THE APPROVAL FROM THE SPANISH REGULATOR
NUCLEAR SAFETY COUNCIL (CSN)
1-02-2024
We’re proud to inform that after a long process and thorough examination of the ASVAD Valve physical characteristics and the results of its validation tests, the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) had given its approval to the use of ASVAD valve in the Spanish Nuclear Plants.
This approval is the confirmation of their proven quality and its best performance against the nitrogen injection complication. With this initial approval, the door is now open to get the same approval from all the rest of nuclear regulators.
ASVAD has proven to be the best solution to avoid the nitrogen injection. This milestone allows us to show to the Nuclear Community the availability of the ASVAD solution facilitating its licensing process.
You can download the approval document (Spanish) at the following link:

As the implementation of ASVAD is specific of each plant, licensers have to fulfill the specific additional requirements that may be requested by their Regulator.
OUR PRESENCE AT THE WNE 2021
7-12-2021
Last week we’re attending the 2021 World Nuclear Exhibition at Paris (WNE 2021).
83 countries are exhibiting at this fair. This is a strong sign of the exhibition’s importance as a forum for the international nuclear industry to meet and do business. 612 exhibitors talks about the deep impact of this fair in the Nuclear Community. Our company was one of them.
We`re a small company yet, but we’re proud to be here among the big ones. Thanks to ICEX, we have been able to be here and to take advantage of the opportunity to contact many other companies that will help us to carry out our bussines project.
During these three days, we have had more than thirty contacts. We want to thank to everyone for their interest.
Could our best moment in the fair was during the WNE Awards ceremony, because our company was a finalist at the Innovation in Nuclear Safety (SME’s). Finally, the Award was for a French company who did it better than us. Anyway we’re VERY HAPPY AND PROUD to be selected among other 84 companies worldwide. This has put us on the top dealing with the best ones. This is our first international recognition.
We will continue our hard work so that it will not be our last.

NEW scientific study about ASVAD is released.
26/May/2021
After several months of collaboration with skilled researchers from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), we have completed a study about the effectiveness of the ASVAD valve in a RPV bottom leak accident. This study shows the pernicious effects of nitrogen inside the RCS pipes, and how the ASVAD valve can mean the difference between suffering core damage or not.
This study is formally published by a reputed Nuclear magazine: Annals of Nuclear Energy .

ASVAD© NEW PATENT CONCESSION
We’re happy to inform that a new country have granted us the patent for the Asvad valve:
- SOUTH KOREA (KR10-2016-7031024) Patent Granted!
We’re proud to announce that our Regulator, the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has started the actions to study and validate the ASVAD® VALVE for their use in the Spanish Utilities.
We also started contacts with CSNI-WGAMA managers to start an international study about how the Nitrogen injection from the accumulators is treated in the current PRA and thermohydraulic models, and WHY this serious complication is currently missing in the PRA models. The nitrogen injection could be a new USI/GSI (Unresolved Safety Issue) o (Generic Safety Issue) affecting to all the PWR in the world. Could the industry response to NRC GL-2008-1 was not complete? We will see.
After a year whitout congress and expositions, we plan to recover the time lost during 2020 attending the 2021 ATOMEXPO XII at Sochi, Russia, scheduled to April 26–27, 2021.
ASVAD will not be at WNE 2020 EXPO… but will be in the WNE 2021!
The current pandemic has forced the WNE 2020 cancelation, but it’s only a temporary delay. We will be in the next meeting with more strength and enthusiasm. We hope you can meet us here.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT REASON TO KEEP THE NITROGEN AWAY FROM THE CORE
Speaking with an academic researcher, he told me about a worrying efect of the nitrogen during the accident. The nitrogen presence (even in low quantities!), strongly afects to the fuel cladding oxidation. It can accelerate the reaction speed breaking the protective effect of the zirconium oxide layer.
The pictures shows serious degradations in the fuel above 600ºC due this kind of oxidation. Nitrogen acts like a catalyst in these circumstances.
You can see the article at: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/316357826_Oxidation_of_Zircaloy-4_in_steam-nitrogen_mixtures_at_600-1200_C?
or see this presentation: Effects of high temperature oxidation of zirconium alloys in various atmospheres.pdf
were you aware of this effect? possibly not…. but now…
WILL LET IT HAPPEN IN YOUR PLANT?

THE NUCLEAR QUALIFICATION PHASE WAS SATISFACTORILY OVERCOME.
NOW THE VALVE IS CERTIFIED AS NUCLEAR GRADE 2.
We are proud informing that the ASVAD valve has successfully surpassed the whole set of tests prepared to certify the valve for use as Class 2 nuclear Valve. The test battery covers all the functional requirements as:
- Maximum working pressure. The valve withstands a pressure 50% greater than its working pressure.
- Maximum Leaks. There was NO LEAKS until the pressure was near the trip point.
- Minimum repeatability better than 0.1 bar. The valve always opened at the same adjusted pressure level ±0.1 bar.
- DBA accident survivality. After the DBA accident simulation, the valve did its safety function and remained intact.
- During these test, the valve was subjected to internal pressures higher as 75 bar, external pressures until 6 bar, and temperatures higher as 165 ºC during more than 5 days.
- Seismic qualification were done by calculations. The valve can surpass accelerations until 8,5 G in the horizontal axis.
- After ending all the tests, the ASVAD valve remained intact. Just all the gaskets were replaced.
All the qualification process have been supervised by the Asvad original designer, by the constructor’s specialist engineers (Ringo Valves) and by external inspectors specialized in certifying valves from TÜV SÜD ATISAE Company.
We hope that the valve soon will be fully available for its worldwide commercialization. We’re ready to receive and process your orders.
